Weekly Update

I know the girls are counting down the days until Thanksgiving Break. I'm so proud of them for really buckling down these past two weeks despite the excitement. We've accomplished so much!

We finished our first historical fiction, Ranger in Time. Throughout the second half of the book, we focused on making inferences about the time period. This book was a great introduction to learning about the westward expansion. Ask your daughter to tell you a few things she recorded in her journal! Solving different word analogies has been our brain warm up at the start of reading time too!

This week's writing lab was extra fun. Check out the details and your daughter's work below!

This week the girls have been solving harder and more complex word problems. Many are able to solve two-step problems on their own and they all conquered a more challenging week of math homework. Word problems are woven throughout our next unit in math. We will begin Unit 3 after Thanksgiving. Multiplication, division, factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers are all covered in unit 3.

We have many exciting things coming up. In addition to Halloween next week, the girls will begin their PE biking unit. Please see more information from the PE department. The girls have written a reminder in their agenda to bring their helmets to school on Monday. Helmets will stay here until the unit concludes.

Fourth grade will have its first Wordly Wise dress up day on November 10th! The girls were eager to go home today and begin brainstorming ideas. I can't wait to see their creativity!

We finished reading James and the Giant Peach and the girls worked hard to think outside the box as news reporters. Check out their newspaper article in their Friday Folder. This is such a creative bunch. I've also seen their theatrical side while practicing Halloween themed Reader's Theaters. It's been a FUN week.

In math we finished the week talking about rounding big numbers-even numbers in the hundred thousands. Next week will be a review of Unit 1 and I will meet in small groups to review specific concepts.

The girls are in the midst of creating a comic strip on Pixton to share what they learned about the 3 Branches of Government. This project will wrap up the government unit.

In math this week we practiced writing and reading numbers in the millions as well as investigated place value. Next week we will compare and practice rounding.

Check out this week's writing lab! Their hard work will be displayed in our hallways for you to see this week.

This competitive bunch is all about a challenge. The girls are taking full advantage of my first monthly math challenge. A handful of your daughters have even solved all the word problems and cashed in their work for a prize. I love seeing their excitement for math!

Weekly Update

We had a great morning blessing our animals today! Check out a few pictures in our October classroom picture folder!

During reading this week I introduced literacy circles. We are learning the expectations and practicing each job as a class while reading James and the Giant Peach. So far, we have discussed what it entails to be the "discussion director", "connector", "vocabulary enricher", and "literary luminary". See if your daughter can tell you the job of one of these roles. Eventually, the girls will independently gather in literacy circles and engage in deeper thinking and great conversation throughout the next novel. What better thing to enjoy while reading James and the Giant Peach than a peach smoothie! See below the picture from today:) Girls- If you'd like to make a smoothie at home, you'll blend vanilla Greek yogurt, frozen peaches and peach nectar.

This week we kicked off our Branches of Government Unit!

Graded math assessments will go home next Friday and we will begin a new unit in math on Tuesday. Unit 1 is all about BIG numbers, place value and rounding!

Weekly Update

Pixton has been a huge hit with the girls. We will use it in various ways this year. This week the girls made their avatar and created their first comic, topic of choice.

Ask your daughter about 3 Word Thursday! Last week's words were afternoon, comfortable and dive. Check out their creative short stories!

While reading James and the Giant Peach, the girls were inspired by his vivid details of characters and setting. We talked about how using our five senses can help with our descriptive writing. For this week's writing lab, the girls chose an image to be included in a story. Their stories came home today in their Friday Folder and I know they are so proud of their creations! Also in their Folder is the Wordly Wise quiz from today. They did a great job completing this independently. We will kick off spelling on Monday! Spelling quizzes will happen on Fridays.

Beginning on Monday, there will be a homework link under "Helpful Links". I'll show the girls how to use this to look ahead at homework.

This week we will wrap up our geometry unit! I will spend plenty of time in class reviewing all of the concepts and will assess the girls on Thursday.

As part of our class chapel message, the girls spent a little time this week making daisies for classrooms that need them! Here they are busy at work!
