Weekly Wrap up

What a week! Our 23-24 school year is going out with a bang. We have just about 14 school days left and it only felt appropriate with 14 students to fill each balloon with a Minute to Win it challenge. The girls had a blast popping the first 3 this week. I love creating these special moments with the girls as we close out the year.

During reading we have been learning about different podcast styles to help guide an end of book project. This week the girls got in groups to create a podcast of their own. Their focus was taking on the personality of different characters we studied throughout Flora and Ulysses. The brainstorming sheet help to guide them to come up with some Q and As. They were even challenged to create a commercial about a product we heard about throughout the book. Enjoy them below!

We have our final Lower School Outreach project to support the Autism Society of Virginia and especially Mrs. Dorion and her team, Ty's Trot, in honor of her son, Ty. We hope many St. Catherine's families can come out for the race on Saturday, May 18. If not, we hope to raise money for her team!

To raise money, we will have a Read-A-Thon on Monday, May 13 in our classroom. Details are here and the girls were given a pledge sheet. The pledge sheets were due today but can still come in on Monday. We will have a read-on for 40 minutes on Monday and the girls will bring home the number of minutes they read. Money should be sent in next week.

Update 4/26

These girls are bursting with excitement for Daisy Days! I look forward to seeing them on stage tomorrow.

In reading, we are almost finished reading Flora and Ulysses and will begin a novel project next week.

Our writing lab this week focused on imagery. We listened to some poetry for inspiration and used our 5 senses to write our most descriptive sentences about a picture of choice. The girls have made a sand art illustration of a favorite place. Next week they will use imagery to narrate their scene.

The girls all aced their NE region states and capitals! Next up is the SE region.

In math we have bounced between order of operations and decimals.

Wrap Up

We have been singing and dancing our way through the week. The girls ran through the musical entirely today and it is looking GREAT. We can't wait for you to see it. We greatly appreciate any extra help you can give your daughter when rehearsing this weekend. The musical playlist and additional songs to the seniors are located in their Google Classroom should they want to practice. See rehearsal schedule below and important costume reminders!

On Wednesday, we flowered the cross on our way to the Gold/White picnic with our partners. The girls brainstormed questions and wonders about Middle School to ask their buddy. See what your daughter learned about Middle School!

3/29

In reading, we are reading Flora and Ulysses. Every 7 chapters, the girls respond to comprehension questions and use context clues to figure out certain vocabulary. To practice, have your daughter share a current summary of the story so far and predict what may happen next in the story with TEXTUAL evidence for that opinion.

In math, we assessed fraction computation and did an amazing job! We are now working with decimals. The girls visited the library for a lesson about the Dewey decimal system to make the decimals concrete. We will add, subtract, compare, and order decimals.

In social studies, we are beginning the regions of the United States with the southeast region. You will notice flashcards coming home for practice with the location of states and capitals.

Ask your daughter to tell you about our current writing lab project!

Expect some very tired girls next week. We will practice for the musical for at least an hour and a half every day. It will be extra important to pack a hearty snack each day. Thank you for your help with this!

Reminders:

*Gold/White Cup announcement and lunch is on April 3. Girls may wear their gold and white this day. We will have picnic on the green with pizza for all of lower school. Feel free to pack a different lunch if your daughter does not like pizza.

*We will also make a trip to flower the cross which will be on the Portico on April 3rd. If your daughter would like to add to the cross, please send in flowers that morning.
